Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)

DKA symptoms include severe rise in blood sugar levels, severe dehydration and drowsiness or even coma.

DKA occurs in Type 1 diabetes patients and is usually precipitated by an acute illness, for example an infection.  Infection can cause diabetes to go out of control which if left unattended can lead to DKA.  Type 1 diabetes patients who are very deficient in insulin may also go into DKA if their insulin dose is omitted.

DKA - Treatment :

DKA treatment requires urgent insulin therapy to bring down the blood sugar level, as well as intravenous fluid replacement for dehydration.
