 Diabetic Nephropathy (Kidney failure)

Diabetic Nephropathy or kidney disease is a result of longstanding diabetes.  It is one of the most common causes of chronic kidney failure in developed countries.  It usually develops after ten or more years living with diabetes.

The earlier stage of diabetic nephropathy produces no symptom at all.  In the later stage, high blood pressure may be found.  Another later symptom is swelling of the legs due to water retention.  When the kidney disease is full-blown, it will result to complete kidney failure.

Preventive Measure:

Special test to detect small amount of albumin (protein) in urine should be carried out periodically.

Careful control of blood sugar and be cautious and selective in protein intake.  American Diabetes Association recommends 0.8 grams of protein for each kilogram of weight.  Being selective in protein intake means to get more quality protein, preferably from vegetable like soy.
